Academic Support from Pre-GCSE to A-Levels

We are a small him and her partnership offering a variety of tuitions in French, English, Science and Maths. We are both highly qualified and enthusiastic about our subjects, and we have extensive experience of teaching a range of age groups and abilities. There are some testimonials below if you would like to see what some of our students and parents have to say about our work. If you'd like a bit more detail about what we do and how we do it, please follow this link; if you'd like more detail about who we are, please read on.

About Sophie (English and French)

I am a fully qualified and well-experienced French and ESL teacher (French national). I studied English for my DEUG at Université de Perpignan. My third year was spent at Sheffield University under the Erasmus scheme, my fourth year earned me two maîtrises (Double Masters) one in French as a Foreign Language (FLE) and the other in English Literature; the two years of my CAPES were split by a year as an assistante in the UK, and my CAPES was validated in 1999. Since I qualified as a teacher, I have taught both langages in private and state schools, in the UK, in France, in Spain and in Denmark.

About Fraser (Science and Maths)

I first studied the sciences for my 'O'-Levels at school in the 1970s and returned to them as a mature student in the 1990s. I took an Access to Science course at Bridgwater College and then read the experimental basis of disease (formally ' Cellular and Molecular Pathology') in the School of Medical Sciences at Bristol University. I received Dean's commendations for both my first and second year exams and I graduated in 1996 with 2:1 honours. For my doctorate, I set up a lab to research DNA damage and repair at Treliske Hospital under the supervision of the Plymouth Postgraduate Medical School (PPMS), the forerunner of the Peninsula Medical School (PMS). I took a couple of short post-doc research posts, first at the PPMS and then in the Biochemistry Dept. at Bristol, before returning back to Cornwall in 2003. I started tutoring students in 1999. Recognising that tutoring science in a laboratory setting would be much more effective than on home visits, the Le Loft project was started in 2011 and the science lab opened a year later.

Testimonials.

"Academic rigour combined with kindness, patience and support - we could not have been happier with the tuition our daughter received from Fraser and Sophie when the school system let her down. With their help she achieved her potential in her GCSEs and gained confidence, too. We can’t recommend them highly enough."

"Initially, we approached Sophie as a speech coach for our grandson 4 years ago. A shy boy, often lacking in confidence and suffering anxiety, his communication skills were suffering due to some difficulty pronouncing and articulating certain words. Sophie was amazing in that she gave him techniques and exercises such as tongue twisters in front of a mirror and reading out aloud. There was often much laughter, the lessons were great fun and they had an instant rapport and trust. She was extremely helpful with the English GCSE syllabus and Frasier too as he helped with his Maths and computing skills. I cannot recommend these two tutors enough as not only did they go above and beyond in their fields of teaching they have become valuable mentors in our grandson’s life and given him excellent advice with regard to interview techniques and skills. They continued lessons, supporting and guiding through lockdown via the internet. Today, our grandson is outgoing, communicates clearly and with confidence and through the constant encouragement of Sophie and Frasier together with support from his family and friends has obtained excellent grades in his GCSEs and A’ levels. Thank you so much Sophie and Frasier."

"As a home educating mother of 3 (and now 4) children I wanted to teach my children French but having taken my French GCSE more than 25 years ago realised that I needed some help! My eldest three children started having fortnightly French lessons face to face with Sophie in 2018 and latterly we have had the lessons online with her. My children are now 12, 11 and 9. I can heartily recommend Sophie as a French tutor - we have been delighted by her work and efforts. She has built a wonderful rapport with my children. They work hard with her but still have fun. We have seen real progress with their learning. In between lessons Sophie provides us with structured ways to build on our learning which gives me a clear focus to follow up, and she provides the children with individual constructive feedback - always done kindly and with great encouragement. She is always keen to ensure that I understand what the children have been learning so that I can assist them with it at home. I am confident that should our children wish to continue to GCSE level Sophie would provide them with excellent support and guidance. I have no hesitation recommending her as a tutor."

"Our son asked us to find him a tutor as he has a real interest in science and maths and didn't feel his secondary school was pushing him enough and stretching his mind. We feel incredibly lucky to have found Fraser. Our son really enjoys his time there and the fact Fraser has a laboratory to back up the theory with practical lessons is a massive bonus and keeps his enthusiasm for science well and truly alive."

"My daughter had maths and science support from Fraser just before her GCSEs and through college.  She is a bright young woman, but things had gone adrift because of various health issues, domestic problems and the “system” not being tailored to catch someone in her position.  She arrived at Le Loft with some catching up to do, but also under-confident in her abilities and emotionally battered by what she had been through. The teaching was excellent and very individual to her educational needs and her personality.  I know that my daughter perceived her progress as a collaborative process between her and Fraser and for the first time in many years she felt that her teacher had a genuine interest in her success as a person.  The practical experiments were what really rekindled her interest.  I will never forget the day that my 17 year old daughter came home chattering with wild enthusiasm about how she and Fraser were separating proteins from meat and that she had suggested hair dye as a marker as it binds to proteins and could she go back to help collect their data. The calm, supportive, atmosphere at Le Loft, Sophie’s presence, the cats, the genuine interest in my daughter’s personal development, made such a difference.  I know Fraser and Sophie provided a sounding board when there were issues in my daughter’s life where an external adult opinion was needed rather than boring old mum’s!The teaching she received was great value and helped her to acquire the grades to get her onto the next stage of her life.  However, it is the other aspects of what she gained from her time at Le Loft that have been so formative in the young woman she has become and I am so grateful for that."
